Senior Associate – Building Decarbonization

THE POSITION: Utah Clean Energy is seeking a smart, passionate, and engaging individual to serve as a senior associate to support our building decarbonization programs and activities. Among other initiatives, this exciting position will serve as program manager for a recently awarded, three-year U.S. Department of Energy grant to support a regional collaborative designed to advance low- and zero-emission homes and buildings.

LOCATION: We work a hybrid schedule in Salt Lake City, Utah in our new zero emission office, the Climate Innovation Center. 

CANDIDATE PROFILE: We seek a highly motivated and experienced Building Decarbonization Senior Associate to lead and support our organization's efforts to accelerate building decarbonization in Utah and the West. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of building energy efficiency, zero emissions codes and standards, renewable energy technologies, and housing affordability. Excellent project management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills are essential. A passion for sustainability and a commitment to advancing climate solutions are key qualifications for this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Manage an internal project, coordinate with external partners, coordinate with project director and finance director on grant reporting, ensure that deliverables are completed in alignment with project timeline.
  • Work with a diverse set of partners to inform, educate, and build support for accelerating the adoption of zero emission homes and buildings, while nurturing strong and lasting relationships with industry, community, and local government leaders.
  • Coordinate with and support staff in developing technical analysis and reviewing zero emission building policies, statutes, and regulations at the state, federal, and local government levels, including energy savings, costs, and benefits.
  • Oversee efforts to convene and lead community and industry stakeholder meetings to advance building decarbonization and zero-emission construction at a local, state, and regional level; make compelling presentations to policy makers, industry stakeholders, community groups, and government representatives.
  • Coordinate with Utah Clean Energy staff and community partners to ensure that building decarbonization policies and programs are developed to be equitable and inclusive for Utah consumers and communities.
  • Keep abreast of new and emerging technologies, innovative industry trends, policies, and equity strategies relating to zero emission buildings/building decarbonization.
  • Coordinate with communications staff to develop content for communications materials (such as websites, presentations, and blogs) highlighting Utah Clean Energy’s building decarbonization objectives.
  • Support Utah Clean Energy’s multi-disciplinary staff in advancing regulatory proposals through the Utah Public Service Commission relating to building decarbonization and zero emission buildings.
  • Support building decarbonization advocacy efforts with state and local government agencies, Utah State Legislature, industry stakeholders, community organizations, and the media, as appropriate.

ADDITIONAL SKILLSETS AND ATTRIBUTES:

• Understand core aspects of low and zero emissions buildings and policy, including energy efficient practices, energy efficient technologies, and low and zero emission building codes and standards. 

• Possess a working understanding of building codes, building department functions, and building permitting processes. 

• Demonstrated project management experience, dealing with tracking and monitoring multiple deliverables and milestones.

• Excellent analytical, communication, and writing skills, with the ability to rapidly assimilate and synthesize information.

• Demonstrated relationship-building skills with government, business, and community leaders.

• Desire to be a part of an influential team of professionals who embrace impactful work and a healthy work-life balance.

• A commitment to understanding the impacts of structural racism in the energy sector and its impacts on underserved and underrepresented communities, and a desire to advance electrification solutions that benefit these communities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Passionate about mitigating the climate crisis and creating a clean and equitable energy future for Utah and the West.

• Applicants should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental science, a STEM field, economics, public policy, or related areas. Relevant experience will be considered as a potential substitute for a degree.

• Strong understanding of building efficiency, zero emission building and building decarbonization concepts, and building energy codes/standards.

• Experience with climate solutions, utility regulation, zero emission building, and/or renewable energy preferred.

• Demonstrated ability (5+ years) of providing technical and analytical expertise, engaging in creative problem solving, managing staff, and working with diverse partners to build support for innovative solutions.

• Highly organized and self-directed, with the ability to work independently, while being flexible in a fast-paced, collaborative, and evolving environment.

• Ability to manage complex projects, meet deadlines, coordinate with internal and external team members, and track progress toward short and long-term deliverables.

• Excellent communication and writing skills, with the ability to rapidly assimilate and synthesize technical information.

• Demonstrated collaboration and relationship-building skills with a variety of partners (such as policymakers, business leaders, community representatives, and government agencies). 

• Desire to be a part of an influential team of professionals, who embrace high quality, impactful work, and a healthy work-life balance.

COMPENSATION:

The salary range for this senior associate position is $75,000 - $100,000 and is a full-time exempt position. Salary is dependent on relevant and demonstrated experience, with most candidates starting under or close to the mid-point of the salary range.
